Brittney Grineris, star basketball player from the United States, has been transferred to a Russian penal colony.

While the US works to secure the release of Brittney Griner, we expect the Russian authorities to provide regular access to all US citizens detained in Russia, including Brittney, as is their obligation.Brittney Griner is being transferred from a Moscow prison to a remote penal colony following a sham trial and an unfair conviction. It is yet another injustice in addition to her ongoing unjust detention. Our thoughts are with Brittney Griner and Paul Whelan, as well as their families, friends, and supporters, who are still reeling from Russia's decision to detain US citizens arbitrarily. The United States is still working hard to bring them back. I, like many others in the Department, am committed to it. We will keep praying for them until they are reunited with their families.
