Sonic Frontiers, the latest lead entry in the long-running Sonic the Hedgehog video game series, deviates from many of the stereotypical elements that, for better or worse, have largely defined the series. The new Sonic Frontiers, the first major Sonic game released since 2017's divisive Sonic Forces, has frequently been compared to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, though the game's creators frequently dismissed such comparisons prior to the game's release.
While the developer has stated that the more "high-end" visual assets will be relegated to PC, Sonic Frontiers' Hedgehog Engine gives the Switch version of the game a look comparable to the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Iizuka described the handheld console development process as "extremely demanding," but it appears that their efforts have paid off.
Unfortunately, the comparative visual downgrade is nothing new for Sonic the Hedgehog Switch ports. While Sonic Frontiers appears to be a little closer to its predecessors despite being an entirely new game, the fact remains that the Switch isn't a console as powerful as the PS5 or Xbox Series X, which means games will always look a little blurrier.
Regardless of platform, the game appears to be receiving a positive response.
