Emerging British-Nigerian artist Essence Martins releases her debut EP “Deer In The Headlights”, and shares the video for new track “Like A Fool”, directed by Jelani Pomell. Drawing inspiration from a fusion of indie, folk, pop and soul, Essence’s sound is uniquely her own.

Through six tracks personally penned by Essence and produced by Jules Konieczny (Tom Grennan, Everything Everything), which include previous singles "Pending Status”, “Brussel Sprouts” and “Wandering Souls”, Essence showcases her ethereal vocals as she reflects on her own journey, experiences in relationships, and transitional phases in life. On “Like A Fool” Essence reflects on overcoming fear. She explains, “It’s about dealing with feelings of fear, a lack of independence while still hung up on the way things were. Change has been a huge thing for me. I always planned on being a tennis player. When I hung my racquet up, I felt like my identity went with it. I often felt like a ‘Deer in the Headlights’, a little lost and unsure of what I was doing. I had to build who I was from the bottom up again and even though it was scary it was really liberating.”

Born and raised in North West London, Essence's upbringing was steeped in sport, specifically tennis, practising and competing in tournaments. At 17 she took to YouTube tutorials to learn the guitar and piano, as a way to escape the pressures of constant training and competing. Despite dedicating her childhood to tennis training, Essence's journey led her to pursue her true passion in music. After a year of studying Sports Science and Biology in the US on a tennis scholarship, she made the life-altering decision to follow her heart and pursue music. Growing up listening to a diverse range of artists, from Norah Jones and Lauryn Hill to Simon and Garfunkel, and later discovering the likes of Paramore and Phoebe Bridgers, she began to define her sound.

Since March 2023, Essence has been touring and performing as a backing vocalist, guitarist, and keyboardist for the acclaimed artist Birdy. Earlier this month Essence played Mahalia Presents, and on 6th March she supports Rachel Chinouriri at KOKO, London. To celebrate the release of the EP, Essence announces a headline show at London’s Folklore on 17th April.
