The Colorado Avalanche selected Nathan MacKinnon with the third overall pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. He became the highest draft choice ever for an American player.

He's also worth more than $8 million per season.

MacKinnon signed a six-year contract extension with the Avs last summer that will pay him $6.875 million annually through the 2021-22 season. That means his salary jumps to $8.5 million next year, then $9.25 million in 2022-23, and so on.

The Avs have an option on his contract for next year at $7.25 million

MacKinnon is coming off a career-best season in which he scored 31 goals and added 56 assists for 87 points in 82 games. He also had a plus-minus rating of +16 and averaged nearly 20 minutes per game.

His cap hit will be $9.75 million this year.

That means his salary will be more than $8.5 million per season.

He'll make $10 million in 2017-18.

MacKinnon signed an eight-year contract extension with the Avs last summer worth $64 million. His cap hit for next season is $8.5 million.
