Taiwan's legislature passed a bill legalizing same-sex marriage in May 2019, making it the first country in Asia to do so.
The bill, which was approved by Taiwan's Legislative Yuan, allows same-sex couples to register for marriage and provides them with the same legal protections and obligations as opposite-sex couples. This was a significant milestone for LGBTQ rights in Taiwan and the region, and LGBTQ advocates and allies celebrated. On May 24, 2019, the law went into effect.
