Vantablack is an ultra-black material that absorbs 99.9% of light. It was developed at Surrey NanoSystems for use on spacecraft.
What is it made of?
Vantablack consists of carbon nanotubes with a diameter of 1nm (billionths of a meter). These tiny tubes are arranged into a hexagonal lattice structure. This arrangement creates a black surface because the electrons within the atoms cannot move freely through the lattice.
Why does it look black?
Carbon nanotubes are made up of pure carbon atoms, so they are very strong and flexible. They also conduct electricity well, making them ideal for use as an insulator. Because of these qualities, scientists at the University of Manchester were able to coat a piece of glass with a layer of Vantablack.
