Everything you need to know about Luca Guadagnino’s new film

Still in the making, Challengers will bring together a stellar cast, including Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist, and have Jonathan Anderson as costume designer

Calling all Guadagnino’s enthusiasts: the wait is over. The beloved Italian director has finally started shooting a new film and what we know about it is enough to make us tremble with excitement.

Challengers follows tennis coach Tashi, whose life goal has been to shape her husband, Art, into the perfect champion player. Still, when Art begins to lose his touch for the game, he’s transferred to a lower league. Here, as luck would have it, he has to play against Patrick, Tashi’s old flame and their teenage best friend. Needless to say, the incident is enough to ignite an unpredictable and complicated love triangle that will make the plot extra spicy, so to speak.

Currently filming in Boston, Guadagnino’s in-the-making project follows his horror-romance set in the American south Bones & All, which stars Call Me By Your Name idol Timothée Chalamet and is set for release later this year.

Besides featuring an iconic cast of actors including the likes of Zendaya (Tashi), Josh O’Connor (Patrick) and Mike Faist (Art), Challengers will have fashion on its side with costumes coming from no one else than LOEWE’s creative director Jonathan Anderson, also the founder of his eponymous label.

“Very excited to be working with my dear friend Luca Guadagnino on costumes for his new film ‘Challengers,’” Anderson said in an Instagram post yesterday, adding that collaborating with the Oscar-nominated director on his first time as a costume designer is “such a dream”. But Guadagnino isn’t new to fashion cross-overs; quite the contrary, having already shot campaigns for fellow Italian brands such as Zegna, Fendi and Valentino.

Though no formal release date has been shared yet, Challengers has all it takes to be another cinematic success. Possibly landing in time for festival season next year, the film is rumoured to have queer undertones too. Looks like the good old days of CMBYN’s peach scene may be coming back after all…
