Magnum Photos and The Photographers’ Gallery join forces on new square print sale, “Now”

Heading

Over a hundred 6x6’’ prints by groundbreaking photographers including Alec Soth, Alessandra Sanguinetti, Robert Capa, Bruce Gilden, Leonard Freed, Martin Parr, and more, will be up for grabs October 17—23 as part of the second of three sales launched on the occasion of Magnum Photos’ 75th-anniversary celebrations

Calling all photography enthusiasts! A new square print sale is coming to London, bringing the work of pioneering image-makers such as Eve Arnold, Alex Webb, and Steve McCurry, among many others, to The Photographers’ Gallery for an exclusive ten-day exhibition.

Titled Now and running between October 17 and October 23 at 16–18 Ramilies Street, this exciting photography spotlight is organised by award-winning Magnum Photos, which this year turned 75, and is the second of the three print sales conceptualised by the institution on the occasion of its diamond anniversary.

Following Precedents, which took place in March, and preceding Vital Signs, the third and final sale set to launch next spring, this print sale will consist of more than 100 signed or estate-stamped, museum-quality 6x6” prints by Magnum photographers and The Photographers’ Gallery for £100 plus tax. To mark the event, The Photographers’ Gallery tapped 31 of the exceptional visual talents it works with, inviting each one of them to contribute to the sale with an image emblematic of their photographic journey.

Centred around the overarching theme of “Then, Now, Next”, all the photographs featuring in each of the three Magnum Square Print Sales bring to the forefront a variety of stories from dozens of photographers’ archives. “Each selection has been curated so that the images work alone or in dialogue with each other,” the Magnum Photos team explains in a press release shared ahead of the launch of the print sale and exhibition. “The story behind each image, as written by the photographers and estates themselves, is shared alongside each print, and is signed or stamped by the estate.”

For this second print sale, the participating photographers were encouraged to pick a photograph that, as stressed by the title of the showcase itself, “stands out to them” now. From Martin Parr’s warm, lively rendition of the Amalfi Coast in 2014 to Leonard Freed’s iconic portrait of Martin Luther King Jr. as seen in 1964, passing through Elliott Erwitt’s incomparable black and white photography, the collection of images soon up for grabs includes life, career, and voice-defining snapshots by some of the most inspiring image-makers of all time.

Alongside groundbreaking photographers of the likes of Alec Soth, Alessandra Sanguinetti, Robert Capa, and Bruce Gilden, feature lesser-known, yet just as insightful names such as Sabiha Çimen, Evgenia Arbugaeva, Pentti Sammallahti, and Luke Stephenson: all part of a new avant-garde of contemporary photography. Spanning eight decades of image-making, Now sheds light on the inestimable legacy of the visual artists that have made the history of the last two centuries while simultaneously shifting the focus on a new generation of talents and their contribution to the photographic medium.

Now, the second Square Print Sale by Magnum Photos, developed in collaboration with The Photographers’ Gallery, will take place October 17—23 on the Magnum Photos Shop. An exhibition featuring all images on sale will be open on the same dates at 16–18 Ramilies Street, London, W1F 7LW.
